Raising awareness on rare disease

The “Rare Disease Day 2016” on 29th February   was observed by the Research Academy for Rural Enrichment (RARE) at Sonepur. Rare Disease Day” was first launched by EURORDIS and its Council of National Alliances in 2008. Rare Disease Day takes place on the last day of February each year. To raise awareness amongst the people about rare diseases and its impact on patients' lives is key objective of the day.

Some facts about rare diseases are:

•    There are more than 7000+ Rare Diseases known/reported world-wide
•    Over 350 Million people world-wide are affected; Out of them 70 Million in India
•    About 80% of rare diseases are genetic in origin many of them being monogenic
•    50% of rare diseases are onset at birth and the rest are late onset
•    1 in 20 Indians is affected by one of these rare diseases
